Son of God

Jesus is the Son of God

Jesus taught using parables in the Bible; Go to our Bible quiz page to test your knowledge about the parables he taught.

In the Bible, Jesus is referred to God as his Father close to 100 times in the New Testament (see Matthew 11:27, Luke 22:29). Jesus is the son of God, and God is his father.

A specific scripture that attests of Jesus' divine sonship is found in the book of Matthew where an angel came to Joseph, Mary's betrothed husband and said to him, "Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost" (Matthew 1:20).

Another well-known Bible scripture that also attests that Jesus is truly the Son of God is John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Is Jesus, the Son of God, separate from God or are they one Being?

John 10:30 states, "I and my Father are one."

This is clarified in John 17:21-22 when Jesus, talking about the believers, said, "That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:"

To clarify even further, "being one" as mentioned in these scriptures, means being "one" in purpose. We can be "one" in purpose with Jesus, just like Jesus is "one" in purpose with the Father.

Finally, a scripture in the Doctrine and Covenants helps us understand more about God, Jesus (the Son of God) and the Holy Ghost: "The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's; the Son also; but the Holy Ghost has not a body of flesh and bones, but is a personage of Spirit. Were it not so, the Holy Ghost could not dwell in us" (Doctrine and Covenants 130:22).

What is Jesus, the Son of God, like?

As read in the Bible, Jesus is kind, loving and went about doing good. He healed the sick, caused the lame to walk, the blind to receive their site and the deaf to hear. He raised the dead and cast out devils. However, the most important thing he did for us was to suffer for our sins, die for us and was resurrected. Because of that, if we repent of our sins, we can have the promise of eternal life with God forevermore.
