The Bible—Scriptures from God

Jesus taught many things that are very important from the Bible; you can go to our Bible quiz page to test your knowledge about it.

The Bible is a compilation of scriptures containing the word of God. It starts with the creation of Adam and ends with the death of the apostles less than a century after the birth of Christ. The Bible is collection of many manuscripts that were brought together over time. As different copies of the manuscripts were translated over and over through the years, changes occurred as witnessed by the many versions of the Bible now in existence. However, the Bible is still recognized by all Christianity as being the word of God.

Do we have Other Scriptures?

Ancient Scriptures were Discovered that Complement the Bible

Around 1823, buried gold plates were discovered by inspiration from God in upstate New York. The plates were translated and contain the history of the ancient inhabitants of the Americas. They are the ancestors of the Aztecs, Maya, Inca, and American Indians. The book traces the origins of these people and how they arrived in the Americas.

This translated book of scripture also contains the writings and teachings of ancient prophets who lived in the Americas. It is called the Book of Mormon. It was named after a prophet named Mormon who lived around 400 A.D. and abridged the writings of the prophets from the previous 1,000+ years.

The Book of Mormon complements the Bible. The main difference is that the Bible is the word of God written by ancient prophets in the areas surrounding Jerusalem. The Book of Mormon is the word of God written by ancient prophets in the Americas. The Book of Mormon writings began 600 B.C. when Lehi, a prophet contemporary to Jeremiah in the Bible, left Jerusalem with his family and others and came to the Americas. Modern archeological evidence substantiates the Book of Mormon and the fact that Lehi was a prophet who had left Jerusalem. In 2009, archeologists discovered the Chapel of Lehi about 70 miles from Jerusalem. (See

Legend of the Aztecs Supports the Book

The native Aztecs believed in the legend of Quetzalcoatl—a great white bearded God who had visited their people centuries before. When Hernan Cortez came and conquered them, they thought he was the great white God who promised to return and submitted to him.

The translation of the gold plates contains information about this "great white bearded God" who visited their people as it documents the visit of Jesus Christ to the people and prophets of the Americas.

When Jesus was in Jerusalem, he said, "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd" (John 10:16). The "other sheep" Jesus was referring to were the inhabitants of the Americas. He confirmed this when he told them:

"And verily I say unto you, that ye are they of whom I said: Other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. And they [those in Jerusalem] understood me not, for they supposed it had been the Gentiles; for they understood not that the Gentiles should be converted through their preaching" (3 Nephi 15:22).

How Can You Know if the Book of Mormon is from God

Around 400 A.D., the last prophet in the Americas named Moroni, before burying the plates in a hill in upstate New York, left us a promise about the Book of Mormon. He declared that if we read it and pray about it with a sincere heart, that God would let us know if the Book of Mormon is the word of God (Moroni 10:4-5).
