Meaning of Life

What is the Meaning of Life?

Is it all just a random cosmic bang that produced humans with such intelligence and drive to make a difference in the world? Why would people have the drive to make a difference, to help others if there weren't something deeper in our souls—a connection to something bigger than ourselves. Movie writers have written about the desire to connect to a higher power for years with such movies as Star Wars and Avatar. These movies are so popular because of our innate belief in a bigger picture.

The Bible also taught a lot about life, and what to do to inherit eternal life, go to our Bible quiz page to test your knowledge about it.

Deep down inside of us, most of us feel that there is a deeper meaning of life than what meets the eye. We want to connect with deity. A scripture in the Bible sheds some insight. It says, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God" (Romans 8:16). This means that at certain times during our lives, each of us feels a connection to God our Father. We can feel of His love and caring. If you haven't felt this and would like to, one answer may be prayer. (Here are some guidelines on how to pray.)

Where Did We Come From?

Knowing where we came from helps us better understand the meaning of life. All of us lived in heaven with God before we came to earth. When we came to earth, a veil was placed on our minds so we would have to live by faith, and so we could be tested to prove to God that we would keep His commandments.

There are several scriptures from the Bible that evidence the fact that we lived with God before this life: Jeremiah 1:4-5 states, "Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."

Ephesians 1:4 states, "According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:"

Finally, in Job 38:4, 7 it states, "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. … When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?"

Why Are We Here?

The meaning of life is encapsulated in the answer to the question: Why are we here? We are here on earth for 2 main reasons: 1) to receive a physical body (we lived as spirits in heaven before we can to this life) and 2) to be tested to see if we are worthy to return to God after this life. Ancient scriptures state, "therefore this life became a probationary state; a time to prepare to meet God; a time to prepare for that endless state which has been spoken of by us, which is after the resurrection of the dead" (Alma 12:24).

Another scripture from this volume helps us understand a more about this life, "And the days of the children of men were prolonged, according to the will of God, that they might repent while in the flesh; wherefore, their state became a state of probation, and their time was lengthened, according to the commandments which the Lord God gave unto the children of men. For he gave commandment that all men must repent; for he showed unto all men that they were lost, because of the transgression of their parents" (2 Nephi 2:21).

Where Are We Going After This Life?

Knowing where we are going after this life definitely helps us understand the real meaning of life.

2 Corinthians 12:2 says, "I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven." This scripture alludes to the fact that there are three heavens. What are they?

1 Corinthians 15:40-42 tells us, "There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:"
