So important was the event of choosing His Apostles, the night before Jesus chose them, He went into a mountain and prayed all night.
See Luke 6:12-13 which states:
"And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;"
Ephesians 4:11 gives insight as to the organization of the Church:
"And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;"
Here are the names of the 12 apostles as found in Luke 6:14-16:
"Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphæus, and Simon called Zelotes, And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor."
Later, after the death of Jesus, when a vacancy in the twelve Apostles occurred because of Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Jesus, Matthias was appointed by inspiration to the office of Apostle (Acts 1:15-26).
