Seek First the Kingdom of God
Scripture: Luke 12:13-34
This video about Jesus helps us to understand what our focus in life should be. Jesus tells us that if our main focus is wealth, that becomes our treasure and our heart is set upon wealth. Instead of focusing so much on providing for our families and accumulating wealth, Jesus tells us to seek first the kingdom of God, and then all of these things (money to provide for our families) will be given unto us.
Now, that doesn’t mean that we should serve God, then sit home watching TV part of the day, studying our scriptures the rest of the day and not work, then hope we have enough money for our needs. We can’t just sit around and hope money shows up to pay the bills. That’s not how it works. We have to work hard to provide for our families. However, we must be very careful about the attitude we have when we work. Are we working to accumulate riches and possessions? Or, do we work so we can provide for our families as well as spend time with them and spend time volunteering or serving others?

About the Life of Jesus
More about Seeking First the Kingdom of Heaven:
As a segway into this scripture, Jesus told the people a parable. He told them about a rich man who didn’t have barns big enough to store all of the fruits of his labors, so he tore down his barns and built bigger ones to store his wealth for years to come. Then, instead of spending his time serving God, his family and his neighbors, he decided to take the easy life and eat, drink and be merry. Then God came and took his life, and all of those riches could benefit him no more. However, since his treasure on earth was riches and not the kingdom of God, he lost his treasure in heaven. From this scripture, we learn that we shouldn’t focus so much on accumulating wealth that we neglect the things of God. We should remember the scripture, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these my brethren, we have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). Or, in other words, when we serve others, we are serving God.
