Get Thee Behind Me, Satan

Scripture: Matthew 16:21-28

In this video of Jesus Christ, He is with His apostles and gives them a brief preview of what will happen to Him at the end of His life. He tells them that He will suffer many things at the hands of the chief priests and scribes of the Jews and that He will be killed and rise again the third day (Matthew 16:21). Peter, not fully understanding what Jesus said and that He must be crucified to take upon Him the sins of all the world, told Jesus that surely that will not happen to Him. (Matthew 16:22).

Jesus then rebuked Peter and said, “Get thee behind me, Satan. Thou art an offense unto me” (Matthew 16:23). Jesus then went on to explain a spiritual paradox. He said, “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it” (Matthew 16:25). The video then shows the love Jesus had for Peter in lifting him back up and His rebuke. You can also test your knowledge on the New Testament and many other topics by going to our Bible Quiz page.

More about this video of Jesus:

Now, let’s take a minute to analyze the saying above. The first part: “For whosoever will save his life shall lose it” (Matthew 16:25) means that sometimes in life we focus so much on “watching out for #1” or getting the things that “we” want that we lose sight of what is most important - God, our Savior and our family. Sometimes people become so self absorbed that they end up losing their family and the things that bring them true joy and peace. The second part of Jesus’ declaration is “whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it”. This means that if we lose ourselves in the service of others; if we forget about ourselves and focus on making the lives of those around us better, we actually end up finding ourselves. We find the true purpose of life. We find the love and peace that comes from focusing on God and loving our neighbor as ourselves. Let us take inventory of our lives and see how selfish or selfless we are.
