A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand

Scripture: Mark 3:25, Luke 11:14-26

The phrase “A House Divided Against itself Cannot Stand” was used in a famous speech given by Abraham Lincoln on June 15, 1858 as he was running for U.S. Senate. Lincoln quoted the Bible, which was familiar to his audience. Here is how the well-known phrase is actually written in the King James Bible. Luke 11:17 states, “a house divided against a house falleth”. In Mark 3:25 says, “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand”. In Matthew 12:25 declares, “and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand”. Needless to say, that phrase, originally said by Jesus in the Bible, has become popularized through the speech by Lincoln in 1858. So, what did it actually refer to?

There was a man possessed by a devil that made him dumb (unable to speak). When Jesus cast out the devil, some of his critics said, “He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils” (Luke 11:15). In other words, He’s using the power of the devil to cast out a devil. That is when Jesus declared, “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand”. In other words, it would be impossible to use the power of the devil to cast out a devil.

More about this video of Jesus:

The critics of Jesus, in this video, asked Jesus to show them a “sign from heaven” (Luke 11:15). Jesus went on to explain that “An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign” (Matthew 12:29). Many people in today’s world say they will not believe in religion unless they see a sign. The challenge with that argument is that there have been many people in the history of the world that have seen signs, but they still didn’t believe. Belief in God, Jesus and religion requires faith. As we start to believe or even want to believe, we are exercising faith that can be compared to a seed. If we pray or study the scriptures with a sincere heart, with a true desire to know, our faith will become stronger and stronger until we can truly know that God lives with a positive assurance. If you are lacking faith and want to gain more faith, do the following test: Pray sincerely to God daily and study the scriptures daily - the Bible and/or the Book of Mormon for one month and see how much your faith grows. They key is that you have to do it with a sincere heart - that means with a true desire to know.
