The Need for Repentance
All of us make mistakes that can make us feel like we are lost or worthlessmdash;like there's no way to return and be in good standing with God and others. This is when we most need the peace and comfort that repentance can bring.
All of us have need of repentance and make mistakes. The scriptures remind us of that in 1 John 1:8 which says, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us."
Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God"
What is Repentance?
Repentance is when a person turns away from wrongdoing and turns his/her heart and will to God. A person who has repented has a strong desire to keep God's commandments. Repentance is a change of heart that brings a new attitude toward God and life in general. A desire to repent comes from a love or God and a sincere desire to obey his commandments.
What Makes Repentance Possible?
The atonement or sacrifice of Jesus Christ makes repentance possible. Because Jesus suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane, and because he was crucified for us, we can all repent of our sins and find the peace that comes from a clear conscious before God. For each of us to repent, we have to first have faith in Jesus Christ.
How to Repent
There are five main steps to repentance:
- Admit that w've made a mistake (avoid denial or justifying what we've done).
- Feel remorse (true sorrow) for what we've done.
- Make restitution (make right what we did wrong). For example, if we stole something, take it back or pay for it. If we hurt someone in any way, make amends.
- Apologize to the person we wronged and apologize to God through prayer.
- Forsake our sins. This means to turn away from them and not do them again.
Weaknessesmdash;when we sincerely try but keep falling into a trap of sin, the most important thing is to keep heading in the right direction and trying to improve and sincerely want to improve. It is important to continue repenting and improving as we have recurring weaknesses.
We can't mock God by repenting with the intention of committing the same sin again. We must do our best to avoid repeating the same sins over again.
Repent and change your life so you can find the peace that only comes when we know God is happy with us, and we don't have a guilty conscience.
