A prophecy is divinely inspired words that a person receives through revelation by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Prophecy for the World and the Church of God

The only person who receives prophecy for the world or the church of God is a true prophet. As it says in Amos 3:7, "Surely the Lord God will do nothing, save he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets".

If an individual says he or she has received a prophecy for the world or the church of God, and that person is not a prophet with proper authority, that prophecy is not from God. We have to be careful, because Satan can imitate prophecy and the gifts of the spirit. 2 Corinthians 11:13-14 instructs, "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."

How Do We Know if a Prophet or Prophecy is From God?

Jesus taught us that in Matthew 7:20, "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." We should look at the fruits of the professed prophet and after getting an idea for ourselves, we can then pray to know if that prophet is from God.

Are There Prophets in Our Day?

In 1830, Jesus Christ restored His church to earth through a prophet. What are the fruits of this prophet? He received ancient plates of gold and translated them by the power of God. The book is the religious account of the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and is called the Book of Mormon. Since that day, there has been an unbroken succession of prophets and apostles.
