Jesus was the Lamb of God who died for our sins so we could return to live with God someday.
Why was Jesus called the Lamb of God?
Jesus is called the "Good Shepherd" because he loves and shepherds us and we are His sheep. At the same time, one of the reasons Jesus is also called the "Lamb of God" because He was brought "as a lamb to the slaughter" (Isaiah 53:7). Jesus became the sacrificial offering for us. All the sacrificial offerings in the Old Testament were a "type" or representation of the offering of Jesus for our sins. (See Hebrews 9:13-14.)
In John 1:29, the title "Lamb of God" was first used by John the Baptist. The name has reference to Jesus as the sacrifice for the sins of the human race.
The Apostle Peter talks about how we can be redeemed by the "precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:" (1 Peter 1:18-20).
Finally, the Apostle John talks about how "worthy is the Lamb that was slain" (Revelation 5:12) and how we overcame Satan by the "blood of the Lamb" and by the "word of their testimony" (Revelation 5:12).
