What Happens to the Body and the Spirit When We Die?

We are made up of a body and a spirit (which some call the soul). When we die our spirit leaves our body, which then can't move, breathe, or think, and our body is lifeless. Keep reading to find out where our spirit goes and more about what happens when we die.

Life After Death

Ancient scriptures with writings from prophets in the Americas talks about where people go directly after death and then later after the resurrection and judgment. They state:

"Now, concerning the state of the soul between death and the resurrection—Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men, whether they be good or evil, are taken home to that God who gave them life" (Alma 40:11).

Another scripture states:

"And, in fine, wo unto all those who die in their sins; for they shall return to God, and behold his face, and remain in their sins" (2 Nephi 9:38).

What Happens When We Die—Before the Resurrection?

After death and before the resurrection, we are consigned to a temporary state while we await the resurrection and judgment. Take a look at what more ancient scripture states on the topic.

"And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow.

And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of the wicked, yea, who are evil–for behold, they have no part nor portion of the Spirit of the Lord; for behold, they chose evil works rather than good; therefore the spirit of the devil did enter into them, and take possession of their house–and these shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth, and this because of their own iniquity, being led captive by the will of the devil" (Alma 40:13).

We will all be Resurrected and Judged by Jesus Christ

John 5:26-29 reads:

"For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation."

What Happens When We Die—After the Resurrection?

Scriptures in the Bible give us a little clue about where people go after the resurrection of the dead (1 Corinthians 15:40-42):

"There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.

There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.

So also is the resurrection of the dead."

2 Corinthians 12:2 says:

"I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven."

Would you like to find out more about the "third heaven" mentioned above as well as what "celestial bodies," "terrestrial bodies" and the "glory of the sun, moon and stars" represent in the afterlife after the resurrection?
