The Good Shepherd
Who is the Good Shepherd?
Although some don't like to admit it, we all need a shepherd in our lives. Jesus is the Good Shepherd and we, like sheep, must follow Him if we want to return to live with God after this life. Let's take a look at some of the scriptures about Jesus as the Good Shepherd.
"THE LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever."
Isaiah 40:11: The first line of this scripture was put to music in Handel (1685-1759) in is famous work "The Messiah".
"He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young."
Ezekiel 34:12: Jesus loves us and seeks us out of the darkness.
"As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day."
John 10:14-15: Jesus proclaims Himself the good shepherd and died for us:
"I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep."
Hebrews 13:20: Jesus is the great shepherd of the sheep:
"Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant."
As we study and learn more about the life and miracles of Jesus, our faith increases. Jesus truly was the Son of God and is the Good Shepherd with arms outstretched continually saying, "Come unto me".
