Why is Doctrine Important?
Another way to describe "doctrine," is a set of religious beliefs that, when followed, will bring us closer to God. If we don't have doctrine in our lives, we won't know how to follow God and enjoy the blessings He has in store for us.
Why Do we Have Scriptures?
What True Doctrine is Available on the Earth?
The Bible is a major source of true doctrine. There are also other scriptures that teach us true doctrine that can bless our lives. For more information, please see scriptures. An additional set of holy scriptures comes from plates of gold discovered in 1830 in upstate New York. It was translated by the power of God and contains the religious history of the ancient inhabitants of America – the writings of their prophets and the dealings of their people – including their origins. This book is called the Book of Mormon.
One way to learn doctrine is to follow the commandments of Jesus Christ. In John 7:17, He said, "If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself."
It is important to learn all the doctrine we can, then try our best to live by it. The scriptures state "It is impossible for a man to be saved in ignorance" (Doctrine and Covenants 131:6).
