Should the True Church of God have Apostles?

Many throughout history have thought that since Christ established the church with apostles and prophets in New Testament times that there should be apostles and prophets on the earth today to guide the true church of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians speaks clearly when talking about the "saints" and the "household of God" and, in Ephesians 2:20 it states how they "are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief stone;"

If Christ Established Apostles and Prophets in His Church... Why Didn't There Continue to be Apostles and Prophets?

We see in Acts 1:21-26 that the establishment of Apostles was meant to continue. With the transgression and death of Judas Iscariot, the betrayer of Christ, the apostles through inspiration (Acts 1:24), called another to fill his position making a complete group again of twelve apostles.

Now, the question is, if the establishment of apostles was meant to continue, why didn't they? We find a clue in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3 which is talking about the second coming of Jesus Christ and states,

"Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him...Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day [speaking of the second coming of Christ] shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;"

This scripture makes it clear that before the second coming of our Lord, people would fall away from the truth. This falling away is called an "apostasy".

Another prophet, this time from the Old Testament also teaches the idea of a "falling away". The prophet Amos declares (Amos 8:11),

"Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:"

The "falling away" or "famine of hearing the word of the Lord" has happened as evidenced through the dark ages. The great reformers like John Calvin and Martin Luther then began to pave the way for a restoration of the true church of Jesus Christ with prophets and apostles.

The Order of Apostles Established Again

Through heavenly messengers under the guidance of our Savior Jesus Christ, the order of the apostleship was re-established or restored again to the earth through a prophet of God.

Today there are twelve apostles again on the earth. Beginning around 1830 and continuing on today, there has been an unbroken chain of 12 apostles who guide the church which is lead by, as it says in Ephesians 2:20, "Jesus Christ,... the chief corner stone".

Under these apostles and prophets, and by inspiration from heaven, the long "thirst for hearing the words of the Lord" is over. The centuries without revelation from God foretold in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3 has come to an end.

Growth of the Restored Church of Jesus Christ

Under the direction of Apostles and Prophets, the church of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth again and is called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church has grown to over 13 million members and is guided by revelation from God and Jesus Christ to apostles and prophets — the same as in the days of the New Testament when Christ established the church originally.
