It's been said that the fear of death only takes a back seat to a fear of public speaking. Why are people afraid of death and God? One reason may be a fear of the unknown. Should those who are afraid of death and God really fear them? As you read more, we'll take a look at the answer to those questions.

For Those Trying to Live a Good Life, Death Will be Sweet

"And it shall come to pass that those that die in me [who are good people] shall not taste of death, for it shall be sweet unto them" (Doctrine and Covenants 42:46-47).

As this scripture says, those who are trying to live a good life (who die in Christ), death will be sweet to them.

What is Heaven Like? Should we be Afraid of Heaven?

Speaking of Heaven, a prophet said, "I saw the transcendent beauty of the gate through which the heirs of that kingdom will enter, which was like unto circling flames of fire; Also the blazing throne of God, whereon was seated the Father and the Son. I saw the beautiful streets of that kingdom, which had the appearance of being paved with gold." (Doctrine and Covenants 137:2).

Again, those who live good lives will get to go to heaven where there is peace and rest.

Should We Fear God

Psalms 145:8-9 says, "The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works."

As it says in Psalms, God is compassionate and is full of mercy. However, that is only extended to us if we repent from the sins which we commit.

What Happens to People Who Rebel Against God who Don't Repent?

A prophet said, "For our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us; we shall not be found spotless; and our thoughts will also condemn us; and in this awful state we shall not dare to look up to our God; and we would fain be glad if we could command the rocks and the mountains to fall upon us to hide us from his presence." (Alma 12:14)

Those Who Aren't Living a Good Life Can Repent and Start Over

Those who are making wrong choices or living contrary to the commandments of God can repent and be in good standing with God again. Read about repentance here. However, be aware that death-bed repentance does not work.

Here's what the prophets have said about death-bed repentance:

"...that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world. For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked." (Alma 34:34-35)
