According to the scriptures, truth is "knowledge of things as they are, as they were, and as they are to come" (Doctrine and Covenants 93:24). Truth also refers to revelation or knowledge received from heaven.
The Bible as well as Doctrine and Covenants teaches about truth, go to our Bible quiz page.
As children, we were taught not to lie, and many of us were punished for lying. We were taught to tell the truth. We learned that we feel better about ourselves and stay out of trouble if we "tell the truth". Because of that, many of us have a desire to know, on a deeper level, "what is truth?"
Truth on a deeper level is much more than telling the truth or lies. It has to do with our existence and the meaning of life. In John 8:32, the Savior of the world said, "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free". Later, Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (John 14:6).
Eternal truth comes from the scriptures and revelation from God. The Bible contains truth and is true (assuming the translations over the past 2,000 years from Hebrew to Greek and so forth are 100% accurate).
Also, in 1820 gold plates were found buried in upstate New York. They contained the writings of prophets in the Americas who had left from Jerusalem in 600 A.D. They were translated by the power of God and also contain truth. The book that was translated is called the Book of Mormon.
God is the source of all knowledge. All truth comes from Him. James 1:5, in the Bible states, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally." The key to knowing is something is true or not is to pray to God and find out. If we pray sincerely, God will help us feel if something is true or not.
