God is the literal father of our spirits. We lived with him up in heaven in our pre-mortal existence and were prepared to come to earth. (See Jeremiah 1:5.)

Since we are His offspring and spirit children, Heavenly Father loves and knows us even better than our earthly parents do. He wants more than anything for us to live righteous lives, so we can return to His presence someday.
To return to God, we have to repent and live lives of integrity. As we pray to our Heavenly Father with faith in Christ, He will help and strengthen us to make it through the difficult times in life.
Romans 8:16-17 helps us understand more about our relationship with our Heavenly Father: "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together."
