Around 1823, a history of the ancient inhabitants of the Americas was found by inspiration from God engraved on plates of Gold. These plates were buried in a hill in Palmyra New York.
The plates contained the history of ancient prophets from the Americas. The first prophet in the Book of Mormon lived in Jerusalem 600 BC. He was commanded to leave with his family, before Jerusalem was destroyed. He and his family traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea, built a boat, traveled over the ocean and were brought to America. Their descendants are the people of Latin America and the Native Indians of North America.
As Jesus was getting ready to finish His ministry in Jerusalem, He said something very important. In John 10:16, He said, "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." The "other sheep" He was talking about were the people of the Americas. After finishing His ministry in Jerusalem, He visited the people in the Americas and told them, "And verily I say unto you, that ye are they of whom I said: Other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd" (3 Nephi 15:21).
The only way to know if anything is true is to go to the source. The only way to get to the pure water in a river is to go to its source—a spring. If we want to know if something–like the Bible or Book of Mormon–is true or not, we must pray to God and ask Him. This is what is taught in the Bible in James 1:5, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally." If we sincerely want to know if the Book of Mormon is true, first we have to read at least parts of it (order a free copy below), then we must pray to God and ask Him. If we ask with a sincere heart, He will answer our prayers.
Summary: before the war in heaven, Satan wanted all the glory, and wanted to become either equal to or more powerful than God. Instead he will be brought down to hell. His fate is sealed at the end of the world and God will triumph.
Revelation 12:4 gives us a semi-obscure answer:
"And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born."
The Doctrine and Covenants, a book of scripture which includes revelations given in the 1830s and later, verifies that a third part of the hosts of heaven were cast out to the earth with Satan— this is found in Doctrine and Covenants 29:36-37.
In summary: there was a war in heaven before we came to earth and Satan convinced a third part of God's children to follow him. The number of Satanic followers remains purposefully obscure. We can only conclude from the texts that there were three parts of unspecified size or identity, and one of the parts followed Satan and hence fell. They were all cast down to earth where they would never receive a physical body. (Read more about the Pre-mortal Existence of mankind.) The followers of Satan don't receive bodies but are spirit in form. They try to tempt us to make wrong choices and avoid repentance so we will suffer the same pains of hell that they will eventually have to. (Edited by Dr. Craig R.
