How Many Angels Left Heaven with Satan?

War in Heaven: Satan and His Angels were Cast Out

Revelation 12:7-9 talks of the war in heaven before the foundation of the earth:

"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."

In summary: there was a war in heaven before we came to earth. Satan and his angels lost the war and were thrown out of heaven to the earth. They are here on earth to tempt and try us so they can get us to be miserable like them.

Satan Wanted the Glory but was Cast out of Heaven

Isaiah 14:12-15 goes more in-depth about what was mentioned in Revelations (above).

"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit."

Summary: before the war in heaven, Satan wanted all the glory, and wanted to become either equal to or more powerful than God. Instead he will be brought down to hell. His fate is sealed at the end of the world and God will triumph.

How many Angels Were Cast out of Heaven with Satan?

Revelation 12:4 gives us a semi-obscure answer:

"And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born."

The "Doctrine and Covenants", a book of scripture which includes revelations given in the 1830s and later, helps to clarify that a third of the hosts of heaven were cast out to the earth with Satan – this is found in Doctrine and Covenants 29:36-37:

In summary: there was a war in heaven before we came to earth and Satan convinced a third of God's children to follow him. They were all cast down to earth where they would never receive a physical body.The followers of Satan don't receive bodies but are spirit in form. They try to tempt us to make wrong choices and avoid repentance so we will suffer the same pains of hell that they will eventually have to.
